The following page briefly outlines the areas of volunteer service available at CWES. It is the aim of the Volunteer Program to orientate volunteers in as many of the areas as possible, allowing volunteers to match their personal skills and abilities with the needs and requirements of CWES.

Residential Services

Volunteer assists cook in preparing lunch

  • Time – Monday and/or Wednesday 10am – 12pm

    Volunteer assists cook in preparing dinner                                   

  • Time – Monday and/or Wednesday 1pm – 3.30pm

    Volunteer assists in obtaining food for the shelter from the food bank

  • Time  Monday and/or Wednesday 1pm – 2.30pm

Client Support

           Volunteer accompanies residential clients to a variety of appointments ie legal, medical etc.

  •  Time – as needed

Volunteer assists client to obtain clothing from Women-in-Need stores and helps in preparation of client moving into new accommodation. In the event that this is not required volunteer helps with other tasks at the shelter.

  • Time – one morning per week

Community Services

Volunteer supports a client who has exited the shelter but who is on the Outreach Program.  Volunteer may help with budgeting, life skills, learning the transportation system, or helping a client integrate into an unfamiliar part of the city.

  • Time – varies from a one time help to a 3 month commitment depending on client’s needs.

Administration

       Volunteer assists in the Resource Development dept. with a variety of administration tasks.

  • Time -  one – three mornings a week. 9am – 12pm

Group Opportunities


Groups of volunteers (between 4 and 8) cook a special meal for clients on special days such as Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving etc. The menu is agreed upon by the shelter cook and the volunteers. The food is provided by the shelter and all cooking and clearing up is done by the volunteers.

A group of volunteers will come and spend a day performing tasks at the shelter such as gardening, cleaning, painting etc.

Special Projects

Volunteers support staff by providing a variety of services for the special activities and programs planned throughout the year.
