Family violence can have a devastating impact on children and youth, including an increase in learning disabilities, misdiagnosis of ADD and ADHD, lack of positive role modelling for health relationships and increases in bullying and aggressive behaviours.

The Healthy Relationships Program (formerly Non-Abusive Futures) is the only program of its kind working with Calgary and area schools and the community to ensure teens affected by family and community violence learn about healthy relationships.

School Groups

The program provides prevention-based group counselling to youth aged 13 – 18 (male and female) about issues such as violence/abuse, power and control, conflict in relationships, self-esteem, safety planning, healthy expression of feelings and choosing a future free of violence.

Facilitators provide small groups of teens with a safe environment to talk about and practice healthy relationship skills. Groups run on-site, during school hours for ten weeks, twice a year from October to December and February to April. Individual counselling is also available, as needed, for group participants.

Parents and Teens in Partnership

Healthy Relationships partners with the South West Communities Resource Centre and Sheriff King to provide parents and teens with an opportunity to explore challenges and create non-abusive solutions to family conflicts.

Facilitators work with parents to support their development of positive parenting strategies and with teens to address the challenges they are facing. The teen curriculum is similar to that of the school programs. Ten week groups are run out of the South West Communities Resource Centre fall and winder and in collaboration with Sheriff King, at that site in the spring of each year.
