OWLS – Older Women’s Long-Term Survival

In 1991, OWLS (Older Women's Long-Term Survival) began as a grass roots support group for women over 50 who were living in an abusive relationship, or were dealing with the effects of abuse. In 2001 OWLS expanded its programming to better meet the needs of women affected by long term domestic violence. OWLS is now the longest running group of its kind in North America.

Facilitators provide a safe, encouraging environment where women can be heard, learn about themselves and others, and gather what they need to safely move forward with their lives with confidence and hope. Group members support and encourage each other in telling their stories and finding within those stories evidence of how they have resisted violence, and of their inherent strengths and resilience.

This unique group fosters safety, empowerment and self-sufficiency and explores strategies, tools and community resources that can help survivors gain independence and confidence and achieve a safe and non-abusive future.

Groups meet for a set of weekly meetings fall and winter each year. In 2007, 34 women received intensive support, counselling and as needed, referrals to other community based services.
