At our Shelter, women and children (boys and girls from 0-18 years) receive FREE of charge: safe accommodation, food, clothing, financial support, toys, referral services and counselling. The Shelter accommodates 40 women and children at any given time and provides a safe haven for 21 days to help women prepare to live without violence.

Last year, 366 women and 408 children and youth were given temporary accommodation at the Shelter. While there, women and children receive basic necessities such as food, toys, clothing and personal hygiene supplies, as well as help in accessing housing, medical care, financial support, legal assistance, child counselling and parenting enhancement.

Women also receive counselling to help them deal with the trauma they have experienced and help them feel safe, comfortable and ready to create a plan for the life they will rebuild after they leave the Shelter. Shelter counsellors provided over 6,000 hours in counselling services for women and children in 2007-2008.

The Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter collaborates with many other community-based resources to empower women to access the information and support they need to make decisions that are right for them and the children in their care.
