Funding
Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter is a community-based charitable organization (BN: 129883443R0001). We thank all of our supporters for helping to ensure our continued financial viability, which is imperative for us to provide the many necessary services we offer in our community.
Each year we receive government funding that covers approximately 40 percent of our budget. We rely on individual donors to provide the level of services required to create the social change necessary to end family violence in our community.
Our Business is Life and Death
Demand on our services continues to increase. In February and March of 2009 the calls to the Family Violence Helpline increase 300% and 200% respectively over the previous year at this time. This still represents a very small percentage of victims of abuse in Calgary who come forward to get help.More than 60% of women staying at the Shelter who took the Danger Assessment in 2008 our shelter was at severe to extreme risk of being murdered by a current or past partner. Thousands of children in the city suffered the impact of abuse daily. We have a responsibility to the community in 2009 to maintain and expand existing services.
Our services are essential and must operate regardless of the global financial situation. In 2008 wait lists grew for our programs and over 2,000 adults and 1,000 children requested to stay at the Shelter but couldn’t because it was full. These individuals were supported through different programs at the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter or through other community agencies. Even if it means us having to pay for a hotel room, no one is left in a dangerous situation.
Looking Ahead within Global Uncertainty
The Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter is celebrating 35 years of making a difference. Throughout the years our organization has seen the economy fluctuate. As always, we plan to keep our focus on the clients we serve and keep in touch with those who make our work possible – our loyal donors. We encourage our supporters to get involved and use our creative fundraising tools to ensure everyone who needs help gets it. The Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter will continue to use your donation as effectively as possible and make every dollar count toward making a difference.
