Safety Plans

If you are living with an abusive partner, you are probably doing many things on a daily basis to keep yourself and/or your children as safe as possible. Unfortunately, your abusive partner is making his own decisions about how to behave, and he is responsible for his violence.

In this section there are ideas that some women have found helpful to protect their safety. Each person’s situation is unique, and you will know best whether these ideas will help you in your situation. Many women keep their safety plan secret and only tell people they absolutely trust.

Counsellors on our Family Violence Helpline are available to support you if you would like to talk over your safety plan with them. Call 403-234-SAFE (7233) if you would like this support.

When creating a safety plan you may want to review your safety plan regularly when risk factors and abuse change.

The document below is a Safety Planning Guide, updated in November 2010 with on line safety tips, available for use by counsellors to help someone create a customized plan.
