Our Research

Program Evaluation is an integral part of all the programs at the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter. We use outcome measurements – a way to assess, monitor and evaluate programs.

This evaluation provides stakeholders with results while improving services and delivery. Outcomes also help to attract new potential funders, staff, volunteers, and clients to the agency, promote the agency’s programs to the public, justify budgets, and contribute to the long-term development of programs.

2008 was an exciting year for the Research and Evaluation department. We have been fortunate to continue our participation in the provincial Danger Assessment Research project and can look forward to the completion in January 2009.

As a result of our research, in-house practices related to risk assessment and safety planning have been improving overall services for our clients.

We were successful in attaining funding for the development of a Children’s Family Violence Exposure assessment tool, to be completed by 2010. We are currently engaged in a community-wide needs assessment that will help to inform future plans for expansion and consider potential development plans.

CWES was invited to participate in a pilot group applying a Social Return on Investment (SROI) assessment that will help us to present the value of our programs in the community in a new way that will strengthen our case for pubic support and funding.
