High rates of abuse for children coming to the Shelter program

More than 80% of children staying at the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter have witnessed abuse.  This is double the Canada-wide numbers from Statistics Canada.

In addition, mothers reported 40% of children experienced direct physical, emotional, financial and sexual abuse. Many mothers cite their reason for leaving an abusive house is to protect their children.

The Shelter helps thousands of children every year through a number of programs.  Though reporters aren't able to speak to minor clients directly, we have a number of front line counsellors who support children to heal from traumatic abuse who are prepared to speak to media directly.
