Child, Youth and Family Therapy Program

The Child, Youth and Family Therapy Program provides support and counselling to children, and their family members who have experienced domestic violence and abuse. We work collaboratively alongside children ages 6-11 and parents to explore hopes and dreams for each unique family, considering new ways to communicate, building safety and trust, and mending relationships.

A household with violence is also often filled with small, seen and unseen actions taken by members of a family to resist violence and to try to protect themselves and others… from the smallest to the tallest. We focus our work on understanding behaviour as it relates to a child’s experience and believe that no child is broken – the way they resist violence often shows they are competent and courageous.

This program brings parents and children together in a supportive way, building on current relationships and creating strong foundations for new ones.

Based on each family’s needs & unique situation, services may include:

  • Individual counselling for children ages 6-11
  • Family counselling where appropriate
  • Individual parent support
  • Play/activity-based counselling for the smallest members of the family

Child, Youth and Family therapists provide a blend of structured and child-led play where children are encouraged to explore their surroundings in a safe & nurturing environment that responds to their emotional and developmental needs.

At this time, our work with children and their family members through this program is being offered in-person only for children. Parents may be accommodated virtually.

In order for children under 18 to participate in therapy, consent is required from all legal guardians with decision-making abilities. If it is not possible to obtain consent from all legal guardians, parents may still participate in the program for parenting support.

For youth services (ages 12-21) you can refer to the Healthy Relationships Program.

Referrals to the Child, Youth and Family Program can be made through FearIsNotLove internal programs or self-referrals can be made through the 24-Hour Helpline at 403-234-7233.
