30th
anniversary
The
Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter commemorated its 30th
anniversary on November 18, 2003. Over 150 community members
joined in celebrating this milestone, including greetings
from the Province of Alberta by Mrs. Colleen Klein. The evening
toasted the achievements of the shelter by recognizing the
past, present and future. Mr. Jim Gray toasted to the history
and growth of the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter.
A toast from a former client of the shelter recognized our
present day programs, services and staff. Calgary Chief of
Police Mr. Jack Beaton gave a toast to our future. In honor
of this special accomplishment, a commemorative booklet was
published that tells the remarkable story of the Calgary Women’s
Emergency Shelter.
For the Calgary
Women's Emergency Shelter, 30 years of working to protect
families experiencing domestic violence is a celebration of
the more than 90,000 lives that we have impacted
and the futures we have enlightened with our work. The past
30 years have seen the shelter evolved from a crisis based
residential service to a multi-service facility providing
a holistic and comprehensive response to families in crisis.
CWES now hosts a wide spectrum of programs including specialized
programs for children, youths, men who are abusive and women
50 years and older who are currently or have experienced domestic
violence. These services are in addition to our core
residential and extensive outreach programms.
